About this audiobook

There is no plague in Enfaire....

Dead things have been found in the fields of Enfaire, a God-fearing town north of Reams. Not just dead things, but twisted forms…unholy shapes. And there are rumors, too, of a blasphemous union and of fell creatures that haunt the night. Yet even as plague and witch pyres blacken the sky, the town remains untouched by the malady that has already claimed thousands and will claim thousands more.

It is here, in Enfaire, that an old Franciscan friar and his ward take shelter from a storm. It is here, in a little town on the edge of civilization, that they will have their faith truly tested.

His Black Tongue is a tale of medieval horror, plunging the listener into the plague-torn land of 14th-century France when pestilence and death walked hand-in-hand, and life was little more than a sputtering candle, waiting to be put out. But there are worse things than death, than sickness and decay…and it comes upon leathery black wings.

Includes The Bone Fields novella and the short story, "The Knights of the Non-Euclidean Table".

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be creepy and well-written, with dark twists in three different stories. The dramatization and prose are praised, although some feel one transformation was a cheap trick that ruined the intrigue.

I really loved the first part of the book (Paul and Remi story). The narration was perfect from both voice actors, and sound effects and music elevated this experience. Sound effects created the dreadful atmosphere that is needed for a horror genre. Unfortunately, I couldn’t continue with a second Novella. I couldn’t really understand what the narrator was reading. I think it’s because the narrator changed her accent and since English isn’t my first language I couldn’t understand anything.

I missed the part of the blurb where it says it's an anthology. Pretty good overall

Amazing audio production, (generally) good sentences, but poor characterisation, plotting, and period details.

Good but not great. The concepts for each story are rich and enticing, but fall flat in the execution. The problem is pacing and density: each story promises (and delivers) intriguing characters and narrative possibilities, but they're gone before we get a chance to explore them fully. In short, they'd work better with a fuller and longer treatment: give us more Luthi!

Enjoyed his black tongue. the other 2 stories were too short to be fully immersed in them. The dramatisation was the best part. I've never read any of Luthi's works but I enjoy his prose.

Creepy and well written. All three stories are nice dark twists to a witch's curse, a Viking tale, and Arthurian knights. Highly recommend.

the transormation of the nun into a demon ruined everything....it was the cheapest trick in the book, shame as it was intriguing untill that point.
