About this audiobook

The fate of the world is in the hands of a father and daughter in an epic novel of wonder and terror by Dean Koontz, the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense.

Since his wife, Michelle, left seven years ago, Jeffy Coltrane has worked to maintain a normal life for himself and his eleven-year-old daughter, Amity, in Suavidad Beach. It’s a quiet life, until a local eccentric known as Spooky Ed shows up on their doorstep.

Ed entrusts Jeffy with hiding a strange and dangerous object—something he calls “the key to everything”—and tells Jeffy that he must never use the device. But after a visit from a group of ominous men, Jeffy and Amity find themselves accidentally activating the key and discovering an extraordinary truth. The device allows them to jump between parallel planes at once familiar and bizarre, wondrous and terrifying. And Jeffy and Amity can’t help but wonder, could Michelle be just a click away?

Jeffy and Amity aren’t the only ones interested in the device. A man with a dark purpose is in pursuit, determined to use its grand potential for profound evil. Unless Amity and Jeffy can outwit him, the place they call home may never be safe again.

Includes an audio-only short story, "Parlor Trick," a kind of karmic coda to the novel.

So very tedious. Could have been edited to be shorter and making it more interesting.

I love Koonz. I have a lot of his books , and listened to several audio books as well. Good story, fast paced and interesting concept! enjoyed it. but not one of his best. Still love his honesty and genuine desire of all things good and appreciating the simple things...and although he's done it before I also enjoy the references to Tolkien :)

Good story, and almost feels like present day with the Deep State. Narrators did an excellent job as well.

I read this book thinking it would be a bit like Dark Matter from Blake Crouch. Unfortunately this book was much slower and didn’t command the anywhere close to the expected level of intrigue. I was left wanting more. Additionally, I found the end quite anticlimactic and really struggled with writing style. There were certain phrases the characters repeatedly reused that got really annoying. Was just good enough for me to get to the end, but not good enough for me to recommend to anyone else.

I was cautious going into this booke because of the reviews I read here.
I really enjoyed the story and the bonus short story at the end.
Narration was okay. The different voices helped keep track of which character's point of view was addressed at the moment.

Good story (I am a Koontz fan) but the female narrator was not great. Odd pauses throughout and her voice, I thought, was too young for the mother although good for the daughter.

Great story. The male narrator is wonderful.
The female. Narrator on the, other hand. Is really really. Very hard to; listen to. She breaks up. Sentences in weird, places and. All of her sentences have, the same. Intonation.

Also, I had to speed up all of the female narrator's sections to 1.8... she

    Talked.

    Very.

    Slowly.

But the story and male narrator made up for it. It just drove me bonkersville.

Different readers changing constantly make the overly complex story quite convoluted.
