It took me a little while to get into this book, as there are a lot of characters in the first chapter. However, Sue Moorcroft does a good job with characterisation, and I quickly decided that I very much liked both Ava, the hat-maker who stars in this story, and Sam, the boss at the agency where her best friends work. There are many issues involved in this book alongside the inevitable romantic thread. Ava is in dire financial straits and has a threatening ex-boyfriend. There’s a character about to undergo chemotherapy, and a minor celebrity who needs a new image. Ava herself dreads the Christmas season, and we gradually discover why. The story moves at a good pace, with drama, misunderstandings, and an ingenious plot resolution towards the end. More intimate detail than I'm comfortable with, and a tad too much about millinery - but on the whole I enjoyed this book very much. Recommended, as a good holiday read.
