About this audiobook

#BookTok phenomenon and award-winning author Alex Aster delivers readers a masterfully written, utterly gripping YA fantasy novel

Welcome to the Centennial.

Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears to host the Centennial, a deadly game that only the rulers of six realms are invited to play. The invitation is a summons—a call to embrace victory and ruin, baubles and blood. The Centennial offers the six rulers one final chance to break the curses that have plagued their realms for centuries. Each ruler has something to hide. Each realm’s curse is uniquely wicked. To destroy the curses, one ruler must die.

Isla Crown is the young ruler of Wildling—a realm of temptresses cursed to kill anyone they fall in love with. They are feared and despised, and are counting on Isla to end their suffering by succeeding at the Centennial.

To survive, Isla must lie, cheat, and betray…even as love complicates everything.

Filled with secrets, deception, romance, and twists worthy of the darkest thrillers, Lightlark is a must-read for fans of legendary fantasy writers Marie Lu, Marissa Meyer, and Leigh Bardugo.

While I can't say I didn't see the plot twist coming, it was a thoroughly engaging story, set in a very interesting universe. Can't wait for book two - hopefully the main character gets a good developmental ark after the events of book one. If you like coming of age and fantasy, this is a bit of both worlds.

Contrary to the reviews I read and saw, I found it to be a really good book. It didn't completely captivate me, but I liked it quite a bit. There are some details that I didn't like. For example, the need to excessively describe the dresses as if it were something relevant to the story. Also, in my copy, there were some translation errors; at times, I didn't know who the person the protagonist was speaking to was. She could be talking to a "he," but the book would describe a "she," which confused and bored me. It's a book I would recommend to someone who enjoys fantasy. Even though it's a book that claims to involve a bit of romance, as the cover suggests, it focuses more on the main plot and only mentions it when necessary, which is something good that I appreciated.
