About this audiobook

The book Elmer Gantry was the basis for the 1960 film "Elmer Gantry". The Elmer Gantry character (played magnificently by Burt Lancaster) has become a symbol of religious hypocrisy.

In short, Elmer is a drunken, womanizing hypocrite who becomes a Baptist minister, a position from which he is soon ejected. He then links up with star revivalist Sharon Falconer, who is heavily based on Aimee Semple McPherson. Throughout his career, Gantry moves through many settings and scenarios illustrating aspects of the American religion. With religion as entertainment and show business, both Elmer and Sharon are consummate performers. They are always on.

This audiobook is a hybrid with award-winning narrator Mike Vendetti playing the male characters, and professional actor Kathy Verduin playing the female roles.

Sinclair Lewis

Nobel Prize-winning writer Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) is best known for novels like Main Street, Babbitt, Arrowsmith (for which he was awarded but declined the Pulitzer Prize), and Elmer Gantry. A writer from his youth, Lewis wrote for and edited the Yale Literary Magazine while a student, and started his literary career writing popular stories for magazines and selling plots to other writers like Jack London. Lewis’s talent for description and creating unique characters won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, making him the first American writer to win the prestigious award. Considered to be one of the “greats” of American literature, Lewis was honoured with a Great Americans series postage stamp, and his work has been adapted for both stage and screen.

A Fascinating Study Well Narrated. Evangelism is Business and an Ego Boost. Elmer Gantry is a 1927 novel by Sinclair Lewis. It tells the story of Elmer Gantry, a charismatic but corrupt preacher who rises to fame and fortune through his preaching and his ability to manipulate people. The novel was a critical and commercial success, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1927. It has been adapted into a film and a television miniseries.

The audiobook version of Elmer Gantry is narrated by Mike Vendetti and Kathy Verduin. Vendetti is a veteran audiobook narrator with a deep, resonant voice that is perfect for the role of Gantry. Verduin provides the voice of Sister Sharon Falconer, Gantry's love interest and partner in crime. The two narrators work together seamlessly to bring the characters and the story to life.
