About this audiobook

“I couldn’t put Dear Haiti, Love Alaine down!” —New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory

Co-written by sisters Maika and Maritza Moulite, this exceptional debut novel captures a sparkling new voice and irrepressible heroine in a story sure to thrill fans of Nicola Yoon and Ibi Zoboi!

Alaine Beauparlant has heard about Haiti all her life…

But the stories were always passed down from her dad—and her mom, when she wasn’t too busy with her high-profile newscaster gig. But when Alaine’s life goes a bit sideways, it’s time to finally visit Haiti herself.

What she learns about Haiti’s proud history as the world’s first black republic (with its even prouder people) is one thing, but what she learns about her own family is another. Suddenly, the secrets Alaine’s mom has been keeping, including a family curse that has spanned generations, can no longer be avoided.

It’s a lot to handle, without even mentioning that Alaine is also working for her aunt’s nonprofit, which sends underprivileged kids to school and boasts one annoyingly charming intern.

But if anyone can do it all…it’s Alaine.

I feel liked it had extra parts that could've been omitted and been a good story. Would've liked to see the relationship with Alaine and Jason expanded. Overall, it was an ok read.

Bahni Turpin does a magnificent job narrating this audiobook. The accents are flawless.

Maika and Maritza managed to tell a story that was multi-faceted yet, believable even with the elements of Haitian folklore and voodoo elements interwoven in the narrative. As a person who has gone through seeing two loved ones fight off Alzheimer's I understand the pain that the Moulite sisters brought to their characters lives. I'd recommend this book to everyone.

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika Moulite
This YA book of fiction put me in Alaine’s head and heart, her family’s broken dynamics, her struggles at school, her flight to Haiti and disorienting arrival and all the lessons she learned from family and those with whom she worked in her spring immersion project while living in Haiti. Her character rings true revealing teen bravado mixed with self-doubt as she works out who she is and her place in her family. I learned some Haitian history and culture along with Alaine. A Family Curse adds to underlying tension and anxiety for characters and reader alike, however, the story could have stood well on its own without this part. I liked how well the mixture of diary entries, letters, postcards, email messages, notes, texts, dialogue, Kreyol proverbs, portions of Alaine’s school research assignment, and narrative text worked together to reveal this immersive story.

This book is great! I loved the Haitian history and the Haitian Creole implemented in it. I love the storytelling, the struggles, and the culture that it presents. It brings life to the bèl lespri of Ayiti. I enjoyed the story❤️

Cute story. It playfully dipped into Haitian history/culture throughout the book
