Summary: Splat is a cat who collects the ducks that his dad makes. All the ducks are different colors and have a special place in Splat's garage. One night, Splat's ducks start to go missing one by one. He notices the day after a duck is taken, it is replaced the following night with its beak missing. Splat decides that he is going to turn into a secret agent in order to find out who is stealing his ducks and breaking their beaks. After Splat has all the materials necessary to be a sergeant agent, he hides and waits. He finally sees footprints and follows them through the snow to find the duck their! It turns out the their didn't want to steal the ducks, he just wanted friends to have a tea party with him. Argument: Overall, I thought this book was a cute way to introduce a variety of topics for young children. I don't think younger children would be able to read all of it but as far as interest level it would definitely be for younger students. This book introduces concepts of colors because all the ducks are different colors. The colors are both talked about and seen throughout the illustrations. This book also talks about becoming a secret agent which is a concept that younger children tend to connect too. Children love to pretend and dress up so I can see children stealing concepts from some of the actions Splat does in order to find his ducks. The best message I got out of this book was the message of friendship. It brings up that concept that maybe we can't see peoples intentions from the actions they are taking. Stealing ducks is not a way to make friends but in the long run it worked for the mouse because he was able to get what he wanted after all!

The idea of this book is that steeling is wrong, and that everyone has the possibility of getting caught. I liked this book because the writing style leads the reader to make their own predictions. One section of the story says,” Aha, ears! Explained splat. Hmmm very similar ears.” The book then showed a picture of some white cat ears. This story is engaging because in a way it allows the readers to be investigators as well. I also liked he voice that the author used. It set the stage for the reader to use a lot of expression. It gave speaking tones such as “Nobody’s hide out, whispered Slat” and ,“ Gotcha! Splat cried.”

Highly Recommended This is the 6th book in the Splat series. Children who love the other books are sure to love this one. Splat has a mystery to solve! Someone has been stealing his toy ducks. Everyday one is missing and one is returned. Splat watches his favorite tv show, “Secret Agent Cat,” for ideas on how to catch whomever is responsible for stealing the ducks. His friend Seymour goes with him. They set a trap. The trap works and Splat finds Spike hiding in his Top Secret Hideout. However, Spike is innocent. His friend, Mouse, has been taking the ducks so he can have someone to enjoy tea with. After tea, Spike returns the ducks. Splat and Seymour realize that Mouse just needs a friend, and “the Case of the Missing Ducks was solved.”The story is a clever mystery for young children to solve. The message of being friends is nice as well. The illustrations are the cute, comic ones that mirror the other books. There is some adult humor in there too. Splat names his favorite toy ducks: John, Paul, Ringo and George. His detective badge has a 003 ½ written on it. The story has a satisfying ending to it as everyone becomes friends and enjoys cupcakes together. This book would be a good read aloud book for K-1. Librarians could use it to introduce the genre of Mystery fiction. It is suitable for a public or school library. It might inspire children to play Secret Agent after reading this book. Overall, it’s a cute book that will appeal to boys and girls and it is a good addition to any collection.
