About this audiobook

This is the memoir of a woman who lived in the 1900s, witnessed the Great Depression and women’s suffrage, and saw what World War II did to American society. Maude was the author’s grandmother, and her story is told by her granddaughter just as she remembered it from the nights when she fell asleep soothed by the old woman’s voice.

Super sad and heart-wrenching story! I am always awestruck with the woman of the past and how much they endured and persevered. I wish more people respected and lived the way Maude did. Not the putting up with men like George, Bud and Paul but just the keeping on keeping on. Too many youngsters don't know what hard is or making due without expecting others to take care of them. (Too many Paul's out there). Regardless of the sadness, this book was phenomenal!

One of my favorite books! Maude lives through so many changing times. From horse and buggy, washboards to cars and washing machines. What a hard life she lived, and yet she kept going.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book as depressing as this one. The narrator has an incredibly flat effect. The best part of the book is the first hour. After that point, it continues to go downhill. Every time you thought you hit bottom. Nope, you had further to slide. They could’ve done so much better.
