About this audiobook

With a sharp eye and wry wit, Roger Hall recounts his experiences as an American Army officer assigned to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. First published in 1957 to critical and popular acclaim, his book has become a cult favorite in intelligence circles. The story follows Hall's experiences from a junior officer fleeing a tedious training assignment in Louisiana to his quirky and rigorous OSS training rituals in the United States, England, and Scotland. Quick to pick up on the skills necessary for behind-the-lines intelligence work, he became an expert instructor. But he was only reluctantly given operational duties because of his reputation as an iconoclast. In his droll story-telling style, Hall describes his first parachute jump in support of the French resistance as a comedy of errors that terminated prematurely. His last assignment in the war zone came when William Colby appointed him section head of an operations group that made its way on foot through Sweden. Called one of the funniest and most perceptive works ever written about life in the OSS, the book includes a wealth of unforgettable personalities that Hall encountered over the years.

Editor's Note

Lively and entertaining…

Though his work was highly serious, Hall offers ample humor and a lighthearted tone in this memoir of his time as an officer for the O.S.S., an American intelligence agency formed during World War II. Stories of parachuting gone awry and colorful characters met along the way make for a lively, entertaining read about an otherwise dark period of history.

I giggled, snorted and laughed out loud! I may listen again if I’m feeling down and need a laugh.

The story itself is anticlimactic, but the comical description of military life and paratrooper school made it worth it for me.

A wonderful book. Dry 1950s humour about the author's time in the Office of Strategic Services. If you imagine hearing war stories from a man who is half Walter Matthau and half Phil Silvers, you will be pretty much on the money.

Well written, inside and out. Along the way, never failing to take the listener with him. H. Allen Smith would have enjoyed the ride. Thank you for this one. W. Fowler.

Interesting and somewhat amusing but the dad jokes and objectification of women make this uncomfortable to read.

Great narrator, nice voice & pace, & really brings out the 1950s style of the text. Glad to discover the book.

Guy is a total douche, would be a decent book if the guy want a perfect perfectionist who could do no wrong. If you don’t like military people who act like douchebags (literally every single one of them) then this book isn’t for you. Full of obviously embellished stories to bring more self confidence to the pathetic author. Great source of information on the pathetic federal government. Very good read if you’re able to put up with the author who is perfect and could do no wrong ever. Seriously, this author tries to make you believe that the second coming of Christ exists in some lowly douchebag lieutenant. Typical enlisted author attitude and typical racism. He’s not a product of his time, the guy whoever it is in this story, is an absolute douche bag who deserves no respect except for the fact he showed us what went on.

It was trying too hard to be funny; I didn’t finish it because I found that was too annoying at a certain point.
