About this audiobook

My Life in the Red Army chronicles 19-year old Fred Virski's experiences as a soldier in the Russian military in the early years of World War 2. With a wry tone rarely seen in a combat memoir, Virski describes the hardships, the near-starvation rations, the inadequate clothing for the frozen wastelands, and his tense interactions with officers of the NKVD (secret police). He is wounded twice; earns a Medal of Valor; witnesses atrocities committed by both the Germans and the Soviets; is branded a deserter; and somehow finds time to fall in love more than once on his journey.
A testament to the will of the human spirit, My Life in the Red Army is a must for fans of World War 2 adventure.

Wonderful book. Great insight into what it might have been like for the average soldier. The editor of the recording did a terrible job, cutting off the reader at times mid sentence and left you feeling like you missed part of the book. A real shame because it’s a wonderful book.

Its a simple report of a simple man put in extraordinary ordeals, with all the drama and comedy of life, mix with luck and bravery and sheer stupidity and war. Love the simplicity of it all. The absolute value of survive and choice.

This was meant to be an autobiography and the author says only names and regiments were change - the rest is as it happens. But one remembers every one of their conversations or minor events this accurately and consistently years later. My strong impression was that much of the minor detail and dialogue was invented. It took the gloss off the whole book and I gave up after a few chapters. It’s a shame because I am sure the real story of his wartime experiences is interesting but this just spoilt it.
