Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool—a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime—it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds. When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption?
Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds.

"Migrations is a nervy and well-crafted novel, one that lingers long after its voyage is over. It’s a story about our mingling sorrows, both personal and global, and the survivor’s guilt that will be left in their wake." - New York Times Book Review
"True and affecting, elegiac and imminent...The fractured timeline fills each chapter with suspense and surprises, parceled out so tantalizingly that it took disciplined willpower to keep from skipping down each page to see what happens...Ultimately hopeful." - The Washington Post
“Thrilling…In piecing together who this mysterious protagonist really is, McConaghy creates a detailed portrait of a woman on the cusp of collapse, consumed with a world that is every bit as broken as she is.” - TIME

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Some of the language in this book is so lovely it took my breath away. As did the horrible realization that there is a direct line from where we are now to the future described... when almost all other life on the planet has been wiped out by human consumption and taking of natural resources. As an ecologist I found some of the statements ascribed to scientists ludicrous, as well as the heroine’s ability to survive in cold water. Nevertheless, that poetic license is also what stirs that recognition in me of powerful inherited forces that drive us to yearn to wander and to be free.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Beautiful writing, although the story went to much darker places than I was expecting. There's a current of quiet, relentless desperation that propels the story forward, balanced by moments of human connection and tentative hopefulness. It's horrifyingly easy to imagine how close we are to a real animal extinction crisis. Excellent audiobook narration from Barrie Kreinik, especially with the different characters' accents.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The axis of the character is the most interesting point—a tension between staying and leaving, controlling and releasing, drowning and swimming. Our main character is a textured personality who slowly unfurls in front of us until we are left feeling like they are our friend.
As much as it is about an environmental migration, the book is also about the migrations that happen within.
A good story! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A joy to read. This book gives the reader so much insight about what we could lose if we do not respect other beings’ lives— We could lose respect of our owns too.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. Very relevant and yet touching and personal. It broke my heart and gave me hope. I loved every moment.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book made me think and revisit the reality of the environment that we currently live in. How far is this reality from our future??
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5You must read this is all I can say. It's very good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I gave this book 4 stars only because it was not the ending that I felt I was being led to all along. The ending really leaves you wanting in a very disappointing way.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I guess it was ok but I don't like unreliable narrators and I felt the plot and motives behind the main character's action were a bit dumb.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This had one of the most annoying unreliable narrators I have ever read. Did not enjoy
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5absolutely stunning. i can't remember the last time a book touched me so much.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Lovely! Great writing, characters and plot that kept me wanting to know what happens next and 20 years ago. Good read for these times.
