About this audiobook
The epic novel, an African Game of Thrones, from the Man Booker Prize-winning author of A Brief History of Seven Killings
In the stunning first novel in Marlon James's Dark Star trilogy, myth, fantasy, and history come together to explore what happens when a mercenary is hired to find a missing child.
Tracker is known far and wide for his skills as a hunter: "He has a nose", people say. Engaged to track down a mysterious boy who disappeared three years earlier, Tracker breaks his own rule of always working alone when he finds himself part of a group that comes together to search for the boy. The band is a hodgepodge, full of unusual characters with secrets of their own, including a shape-shifting man-animal known as Leopard.
As Tracker follows the boy's scent — from one ancient city to another; into dense forests and across deep rivers — he and the band are set upon by creatures intent on destroying them. As he struggles to survive, Tracker starts to wonder: Who, really, is this boy? Why has he been missing for so long? Why do so many people want to keep Tracker from finding him? And perhaps the most important questions of all: Who is telling the truth, and who is lying?
Drawing from African history and mythology and his own rich imagination, Marlon James has crafted a novel unlike anything that's come before it: a saga of breathtaking adventure that's also an ambitious, involving story. Defying categorization and full of unforgettable characters, Black Leopard, Red Wolf is both surprising and profound as it explores the fundamentals of truth, the limits of power, and our need to understand them both.
Editor's Note
Swords and sorcery epic…
“Black Leopard, Red Wolf” has been billed as “Black Panther” meets “Game of Thrones.” It is a swords and sorcery epic built on a foundation of African folklore, packed with dynamic (and often graphic) action scenes that would fit perfectly in the pages of a comic. But it’s also a story of trauma, loss, and the struggle for self-identity, especially in those who diverge from dominant culture.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was such a satisfying read. Well I guess I should say listen because it was an audiobook. The audiobook narrator did an excellent job. Affect that completely surprised me. this had to be the best black fantasy book I've read since reading one of Octavia butlers books.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's fascinating to get an African, completely non-Western take on a fantasy epic. The main characters are not nice people but feel convincing, and the relationships the main character, Tracker, has with his best friend, Leopard; his lover, Mossi (sp?) and others are compelling. The book is packed with lots of violent action—perhaps an excessive amount for some. Big fights come pretty often—almost as in a comic book— and there is a fair amount of horror in the form of corpse-eating ghouls and baby-killing witches. I'm not a fan of horror, but didn't find these elements off-putting. The excellent narrator offers consistent and differentiated voices with an African lilt (I kept wondering if the accents are authentic). Overall, an audiobook whose spell has stayed with me now for many days since I finished listening.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is an African epic tale that feels both new and ancient at the same time. The story is defined by its violence and sexuality, as well as the usage of stream of consciousness narration. The style of writing and themes are deliberate, thus making Black Leopard, Red Wold challenging as a read.
