About this audiobook
Joseph Sherman first visits Saigon, the capital of French colonial Cochin-China, in 1925 on a hunting expedition with his father, a US senator. He is lured back again and again as a traveler, a soldier, and then as a reporter by his fascination for the exotic land and for Lan, a mandarin’s daughter he cannot forget. Over five decades Joseph’s life becomes enmeshed with the political intrigues of two of Saigon’s most influential families, the French colonist Devrauxs, and the native Trans—and inevitably with Vietnam’s turbulent, war torn fate. He is there when the hatred of a million coolies rises against the French, and when the French Foreign Legion fights it’s bloody last stand at Dien Bien Phu.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a compelling, informative piece of historical fiction, covering the history of Vietnam from 1925 through the conclusion of the Vietnam war. The story mention many interactions that occurred between the US and various Vietnam organizations, supporting my personal opinion that the US should never have entered that war.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Anthony Grey has done his homework. Random fact checking corroborates historical data that is woven superbly into a rich novel about colonial Vietnam, the rise and fall the of French, the demise of the United States and the brutality of all sides. All is portrayed across the stage of the Ngo and Sherman family struggles, mistakes and misplaced loyalties.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Stunning epic novel .Part fiction part history .A look back in time leading up to the fall of South Vietnam
