- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Bass's fictional account of the absurd and disastrous Mier Expedition during the early years of the Republic of Texas, when Mexico under Santa Anna, Britain, and the US jostled with each other to control the young republic, is a parable about war, youth, and machismo that fits many contemporary events. The tale is told with simple language, without editorial comment, and thus heightens the overall emotional impact. It's not so much anti-war as it is anti-drug--in this case, war is the drug that inflames passion and short-sightedness. There can be good reasons to go to war, but often the reasons are more emotional, encouraged by the drug rather than reason. A fasinating read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A literary exploration into Historical Fiction about a raid into Mexico for revenge on bandits that raided Texas. The main character relates the story of their adventures, capture, escapes, and imprisonment. A wonderful read. Every time I pick up Rick Bass, I am left happy that I have read his work.
