This books brings together the short stories of H. P. Lovecraft under one cover and at 800+ pages it is heavy going in more than one way.It is a mixture of stories which sometimes show their age. Some are just not scarey (but would have been in their day), some are just confusing to read but some also make you look over your shoulder when you read them late on an evening.I can never change books mid flow (even short stories) but I would say maybe break this up about half way with something else. Towards the end the stories, in places, started to show similarities so it is good to step back and read part 2 nice and fresh!

Absolutely stunning. Lovecraft's writing is interesting because he uses emotions and imagery mostly tapped from the readers' imaginations. Combined with excellent prose, this makes the writing both timeless and uniquely personal to the reader.

A must-have book for all fans of horror reading! A classic collection of stories, all wrapped up in an attractive new hardback edition. Seriously worth a look, even if you are not a huge Lovecraft fan - it may just change your perception of the work completely (for the better!)

Fair warning -- all of Lovecraft's work is suffused with his racism and misogyny. He also tends to overwritten passages that are pure examples of purple prose. Yet he was, and is, a major influence on many writers and indeed, could be argued to be more of a presence in modern-day horror/science fiction than in mainstream horror novels. For the reader who is comfortable with prolixity or who wants to better understand writers such as Stross, reading Lovecraft is a necessity.

More weird tales that live up to the author's reputation for the bizarre.

I must have read nearly everything by Lovecraft thirty years ago or more. Was concerned that it might be a letdown but I really enjoyed ( if that's the right word) reading all the Cthulu related stories in one volume. The language is so flowery in places that it should be risible (see S Donaldson for some really bad examples) but somehow it works and I am in awe of his facility with language. I was disappointed with the article on the Author's life which completes the book - it's more of a chronology or extended bibliography than a real biography. I learnt nothing of note from this but plan to read Decamp's biography soon.

I read this for the "A Gothic Fiction Novel" part of my 2019 reading challenge. I should have picked something else, I rarely like short stories or science fiction. Many of these stories were slow and had similar plots. A few were very similar to Frankenstein. Overall, not my cup of tea.

Lovecraft. No matter what they say and about whom, it all really begins with Lovecraft and virtually everything since owes some type of debt to his genius. If you're a horror fan and yet not a Lovecraft fan, one might seriously wonder about your mental status. ;) Anything by Lovecraft is recommended. This book easily meets the high standards he continually set. Thus, extremely recommended.

Some of the stories were AMAZING and others were just good. As a whole, he might be one of my new favorite writers. Great for horror/sci-fi fans. Listened to the Hoopla Audiobook.
