About this audiobook
What could be worse than letting billions die?
In the near future, to escape the crush and clutter of a packed and polluted Earth, the world’s elite flock to Atopia, an enormous corporate-owned artificial island in the Pacific Ocean. It is there that Dr. Patricia Killiam rushes to perfect the ultimate in virtual reality: a program to save the ravaged Earth from mankind’s insatiable appetite for natural resources.
The Atopia Chronicles (Book 1 of the Atopia series) is the tale of mankind’s dark slide across the apocalypse as humans and machines merge in a world teetering on the brink of ecological ruin.
Matthew Mather
After earning a degree in electrical engineering, Matthew Mather started his professional career at the McGill Center for Intelligent Machines. He went on to found one of the world's first tactile-feedback companies, which became the world leader in its field, as well as creating an award-winning brain-training video game. In between, he's worked on a variety of start-ups, from computational nanotechnology, electronic health records, and weather prediction systems to genomics and social-intelligence research. In 2009, the original inspiration for his technology career—reading the great masters of science fiction—set him on a new path. The result was the bestselling Atopia series, including The Atopia Chronicles, The Dystopia Chronicles, and The Utopia Chronicles. He is also the author of the Nomad novels, Nomad and Sanctuary, as well as Darknet and CyberStorm, the latter soon to be a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox. He divides his time between Montreal, Canada, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Oh my god! 2 stars for audio chapter 1. couldn't listen anymore. Felt like I was in a beatnik Lounge listening to angry poetry. sounded very interesting and was excited. Hopefully this is a better read because listening to it is driving me crazy! It's a shame too because they have such great narrators

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Barely made it to 5 minutes. Such a shame as it sounded an interesting series .
The narrator was cringeworthy. I listen to books to relax, the narrator had me wanting to punch something. Dreadful - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Barely made it through chapter 1 because of the narrator. Her accent and cadence are like nails on a chalkboard !
Update: I ended up pushing through, and she is replaced by many narrators. The book is ok, not great. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I made it all the way to Chapter 9 before the narrator had me grinding my teeth and flinching. I really tried to hang on because the story itself seems to be going somewhere. I’ll have to read it, because this narrator just screams at you the whole time and seems to be spazzing out.
