Play Station

There are two laws of nature when you have children: first, the toys will spread to every corner of the home. Second, you will find the missing Lego brick in the middle of the night — by stepping on it.

The midnight discovery I can’t help you with. However, the play station project here can offer some assistance in corraling the chaos. Its designer, John Doyle, created a modular system that combines a double-surface table, a bookcase, and an art center. The photos at left give you an idea of how it was received by some guests to the shop at Woodsmith.

The top of the table lifts off to reveal a recessed surface. Rather than having to find a place to tuck the top out of the way, John turned a problem into a friend. The bottom side is coated with chalkboard paint and slips into one end of
