The Gregorian Calendar is used globally as the calendar of choice for trade and business purposes. It was first introduced in 1582 and issued by Pope Gregory XIII to the Western world. When the West began to dominate the globe politically, its colonies adopted it as the system to go by. That does not mean, however, that non-Western societies stopped using their calendars completely. They were relied on for cultural and religious purposes instead.
