Introduction

On the first day of creation, God created light¹. By saying, Let there be light, God spoke the universe into existence. With those words God triggered creation.

Prior to God speaking the universe into existence, there was nothing except God. God is an endless, timeless, boundless, limitless, eternal being. He has no need for the universe and He has no need for time. Our sages teach that everything that God created was for the benefit of mankind.

The Torah follows the statements about the creation of light by saying, "There was evening; there was morning; the first day²." Since nothing existed prior to this moment, this was the first evening, the first morning, and the first day; ever. Therefore, the Torah implicitly declares that this is when God created time.
