Gearbox oil

Q A friend of mine gave me couple of bottles of brand new 75W-90 Castrol Transaxle fluid he initially got for his VW vehicles. I thought it was the same as the one I use in my Ford, but after double checking, it appears that my car uses 75W-90 Multivehicle type, although viscosity is the same. I looked online on Castrol website and could not ascertain great difference between the two.

Could you advise if this Castrol Transaxle fluid would be suitable for my Ford Focus MTX75 gearbox or 2011 Fiat Punto 1.2 – both of which have recommended Multivehicle type on eurocarparts.com website?

A I put this question to UKLA-VLS. org.uk who are the experts in oil and the verification of lubricant specifications. I received this answer:

The first recommendation is always to look in the vehicle owner’s manual, as the correct transaxle fluid should be specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

If the owner’s handbook is missing, then the next step would be to contact the OEM or authorised dealership directly and ask the question.

Although transaxles perform the same basic function by transferring the power generated through the engine to the wheels, they are subject to different fluid performance requirements depending on the vehicle, which could include engine size and power output, the torque generated
