20 MINUTES TO SPARE

Prepare areas of ground that will be planted up with summer bedding. Fork it over to remove any perennial weeds, then rake it level to make planting easier. Planting in uneven ground can result in plants going in at different depths and water accumulating in puddles around them during wet spells.

Use rotted compost

Check if homemade compost is ready to dig out and spread over the garden. Scrape some out, and if it is ready it should be friable and shouldn’t smell awful; you’ll just notice a pleasant, earthy aroma.
