THE STORY BEHIND…

My new novel, Queen Macbeth, is the newest instalment in the Darkland Tales series, published by Birlinn. These are a series of novellas reimagining elements of Scottish history or myth; the defining myths of the nation, if you like.

One of those big myths is what Shakespeare tells us about Macbeth and his wife, and my novel reexamines Lady Macbeth through the lens of my imagination.

I could have reworked the Shakespeare idea of her, or I could have set her story in modern times, but the more I looked at it the more I thought it would be interesting to go back to the original historic character of Macbeth’s wife and retell her story in its true historic context.
