In the inner-Sydney suburb of Leichhardt, small terraces and cottages jostle for light and air. Homes cluster below large trees that have precariously grown between walls in the small pockets of gardens and side passages. Many homes suffer from damp conditions and plagues of mosquitos, as little-to-no airflow makes its way to the ground. Ground conditions are uneven and messy as tree roots and groundwater exert their influence.

House Lupe was once a dank and unfriendly terrace. The original house crammed a row of three tiny bedrooms into an overshadowed and unventilated footprint, with scant access to outdoor space. However, the site contained a side passage – uncommon for terraces in the area – that could be
