Boot and Jean Maker Kelly Martin learned a lot from her parents, but she’s also self-taught

Kelly Martin’s father taught her how to make boots; and her mother taught her top stitching. That education started when she was just two years old. Reared in the cowboy world of custom boots, saddles, belts and purses, young Martin was steeped in the trade almost as a birthright.

And while she might have strayed from the family business for a few years – that uncertain time during and after high school – she eventually came back to what she knew best, perfecting her craft and becoming a master bootmaker along the way.

Her return to leathercraft would have been in 1990, when she started building a pair of boots on her own, eventually finding her niche – rugged boots for working cowboys adorned
