CUBA
Just after lunch on 1 February 2019, a 360,000kg meteor travelling at more than 64,000kmh exploded above western Cuba creating a sonic boom and showering the Viñales Valley in fragments of meteorite. I cycled into the valleys main village later that afternoon on an ebike tour. The talk that evening was of repairing shattered windows, checking on neighbours and the locals who had gone to hunt for the pieces. At pretty B&B and cafe MogoteArte on the outskirts of Viñales village, the owner has embedded some of the fallout into a little memorial.
It’s not the first time junk from outer space has crashed into Cuba. The island, like the rest of Earth, was hit by, is named after the valley.
