It would be easy to miss the east coast Maritimes if you either ship your own motorhome, as we have, or rent, but miss them at your peril. Canada road trips conjure images of the magnificent Rockies and all the delights out west, but the Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have a very different vibe and a fabulous one at that.
We shipped our motorhome into Halifax as part of an 18-month adventure, heading across Canada, down into the US and back up to Canada before heading back to the UK. We immediately encountered Canadian hospitality at Greg and Joanie’s Airbnb, while we waited for customs clearance of our ’van.
Once ready, we set off to explore. Halifax itself has a great waterfront area and a long pedestrian boardwalk right next to where the cruise ships dock. There’s a fine selection of restaurants, a bustling waterfront with the traditional Adirondack chairs, and a large number of craft beer establishments, what’s not to enjoy?
Canada, we quickly learned, has lots of historic sites and monuments, national parks and provincial parks and it’s really easy to get around. A great one for the view is York Redoubt, a National Historic Site, the York Shore Battery being named after the Duke of York by his brother, Prince Edward.
