Rise in motorhome and campervan thefts in Coventry, Birmingham and Leeds
A major insurer is warning campervan and motorhome owners in the Midlands and Leeds that it has seen a significant increase in thefts of these vehicles since the start of the year.
Motorhomes and campervans are being targeted and stolen, probably by gangs, warned Comfort Insurance, which advised owners to take extra security measures to protect their vehicles from the thieves.
In the areas of Coventry and Birmingham, as well as Leeds city, thefts of motorhomes and campervans, particularly but not exclusively, valued between £30,000 and £60,000 have jumped by as much as 75% compared to the same period last year.
No particular makes or models are being targeted - typically just those models that are in that price range and first registered in 2017 to 2019, although attempts have been made to steal newer, higher-value models but these were thwarted by more advanced anti-theft tracking systems.
“We’ve seen a significant rise in thefts since January in the CV [Coventry] postcode area along with Birmingham and Leeds,” said Ben Cue, Director of Operations at Comfort Insurance.
“Theft is definitely seeing an increase since January and it feels as if there are gangs targeting this segment quite heavily.”
It said owners should remain vigilant about their vehicle’s security and Comfort provided some additional measures motorhome and campervan owners can take.
Trackers are the best chance of having a stolen motorhome or campervan recovered, “A tracker will monitor your vehicle 24/7 and,
