If there is one thing I’ve learned during the many years that I have been repairing vintage scooters, it’s that things rarely ever go to plan! By that I mean the job always seems so straightforward in my mind, for example: remove the floorboards and exhaust, drain the oil, whip off the side case cover, fit the new clutch, and then rebuild. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But the truth is, nuts and bolts are often rounded, sheared, snapped. Gaskets faces are damaged, chains and sprockets are worn, the new ‘super duper clutch’ doesn’t fit, and so on. The net result is that a three-hour job often turns into a six-hour job and you just have to suck it up and take it on the chin. So, when I elected to rebuild the front end of the Lambretta this month, I was pleasantly surprised that everything went to plan for once! It’s a shame that it doesn’t happen more often, but when it does it’s a real boon!
