he Berlin Film Festival has always encouraged a more liberal outlook than some of its European counterparts, being the first major festival to introduce a dedicated queer sidebar back in 1978, and frequently favouring outspoken filmmakers in its selections, such as multiple Berlin prizewinner, the Iranian dissident Jafar Panahi. Following the election of Donald Trump in 2016 the festival was among the first to criticise his appointment, and in 2022 Berlinale issued a statement denouncing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
