The image of the spinning wheel carries much weight across the globe, but perhaps the most meaningful form of spinning symbolism lies in Buddhist culture – in particular, Tibetan Buddhism.
While the origins of Buddhist prayer wheels are unknown, it is estimated that their use dates as far back as 400AD. They are cylindrical devices which contain Buddhist mantras and prayers engraved onto a series of rotating wheels.
