PLOTTER OF THE MONTH GET GROWING

Dave has been growing veg in his garden and on an allotment for 15 years and enjoys the health benefits and just eating fresh veg.

Do you share your plot with others?

No, I used to have my boys help me but they've grown out of it (for the time being).

What do you find most challenging about growing your own veg?

Every year seems to be different, I'm always learning and there is always something that doesn't go quite right.

After a few years of failure due to allium leafend of February and plant out at the end of April. I cover with mesh until June. When I weed I also expose the bulbs of the onion; this makes them larger. If they topple over then they have early white rot. I harvest in July and dry them in my potting shed. I then string them up and they usually last until May. Last year I experimented by planting out the stored onions that bolted. I collected the seeds from them and sowed them in February.
