Flowers and flowing curves
This Lily design is the perfect block for using the curved-back edges technique – anything naturalistic, like flowers and leaves, looks best with flowing curves rather than the usual angular piecing. The centre of the design features the Cathedral Window look-alike that appeared in an earlier Block of the Month, so this won’t be totally new for you. There is also another origami-style technique for making a folded Flying Geese unit.
Choosing the fabrics
The lily shape combines two (2) fabrics – one (1) for the main outer petals and the other for the inner section of each flower. I used one (1) of the dark Ink range (Fabric A) by Janet Clare for the outer petals (16950 16) plus the same design in the medium (Fabric B) Sky fabric (16950 14) for the inner section.
The centre is made using Fabric C, the darkest of the Ink range of fabrics (16954 20).
In addition, I used two (2) background fabrics in this block. The inner area uses the slightly patterned fabric, while the surrounding background squares are cut from the plainer background fabric.
One (1) extra fabric (Fabric D) is used as a square between the four (4) flower shapes. I used a fabric from the Parchment range; these fabrics are slightly stronger than the two (2) background fabrics and so are more of an intermediate step between the stronger flower fabrics and the background.
