’61 TURBO BUG

Take a canary yellow 1970 Beetle, refurbish it with new wings, bonnet, decklid and valances from a ’65 model. Then cut the roof to fit a ragtop and paint the body bright green, enhanced with magenta and sapphire graphics.

Sounds like a car that some of you might have seen at a late-1980’s Bug Jam at Santa Pod, right? Well, it actually describes the very first VW owned by northern California resident, Steve Mizzi, who now drives the blue ’61 shown here.

“My life revolved around that ’70 Beetle, which I bought for $800 in 1987, when I was 14,” he recalls. “Back then, I was a ‘bag boy’ at a grocery store, and if I wasn’t at school, or work, I was in my garage.
