’67 APAL JET BUGGY

As well as being a member of Belgian Cal Look club, Der Autobahn Scrapers, David Ballard is also a big American car enthusiast. So, when he decided to choose a Belgianmade Apal Jet Buggy as the basis for his new project, he determined to combine his two passions, and to prove to the world that the ‘ugly duckling’ Buggy, with its front end vaguely reminiscent of a third generation Corvette, could be made cool.

David actually bought the car in 2016, but it wasn’t until 2019 that he started working on it, with the aim of taking it on holiday the following summer.

However, when he dismantled it, he found the floorpan to be in very poor condition, badly shortened, with poor quality welds and plenty of rust, all hidden under a thick layer of body filler.

Rather than try and make the best of a bad job, he went in search of a replacement floorpan and found one from a ’67 at Pascal and Valérie’s AP Shop.

While in much better condition, the new ’pan still needed to be shortened by 27cm (just under 11in), and
