Commentary: Passage of the cease-fire resolution was a proud moment for Chicago

Following weeks of delays and emotional debate, the Chicago City Council finally passed a resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza last Wednesday, becoming the largest American city to take such a stand. Even as the final vote passed with the narrowest of margins — 24-23, with Mayor Brandon Johnson casting the tiebreaking vote — it is impossible to underestimate the importance of such a statement.

Cease-fire resolutions such as this are far more than symbolic, “feel-good” exercises. Several cities across the country have called for a cease-fire in Gaza because
