인간이 자연의 쓸모를 정할 수 있는가?: 〈제23회 송은미술대상전〉

1월 6일, 제23회 송은미술대상 수상자로 유화수가 선정됐다. 그의 작업은 시의성 있는 주제를 독창적이고 효과적으로 풀어내 호평을 받았다. 유화수는 기술이 인간의 노동에 미치는 영향과 기술과 장애의 관계 그리고 그들이 만나 어떤 사회 현상을 만드는가에 주목해왔다. 이번 전시에서는 조망권을 해친다는 이유로 잘려나간 주거단지의 나무를 활용한 설치 작품을 선보였다. ‘재배의 몸짓'(2023)은 잘린 나뭇가지가 인간이 고안한 스마트팜이라는 첨단기술 안에서 버섯을 재배하는 돌봄의 역할을 수행하는 모습을 보여준다. 그는 개인전 <잡초의 자리>(2021)에서도 스마트팜 속에 쓸모없는 식물을 넣어 전시하는 방식을 사용했다. 이를 통해 인간이 결정하는 쓸모의 기준과 기술은 정교히 발전하지만, 환경에 대해서는 둔감해지는 오늘날의 인간 중심적 사고에 질문을 던진다. 전시에서 대상작 이외에도 본선에 오른 작가 20인의 작품을 감상할 수 있다. 섬에 버려진 물건들을 활용한 신제현의 다학제적 설치 작품 ‘물의 소리'(2023), 재개발 지역에 심긴 호두나무가 변화하는 과정을 기록한 박형진의 회화 두 점 ‘호두나무'(2023)에도 동시대의 생태환경에 대한 문제의식이 담겨 있다. 본선에 오른 국내 젊은 작가들은 오늘날의 사회문제뿐 아니라 내면의 감정, 미술 자체의 개념 등 다양한 주제를 다룬다. 또한 회화, 조각, 설치, 영상 등 여러 매체를 아우르는 이들의 작업에서 한국 미술의 다채로운 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 전시는 송은에서 2월 24일까지 진행된다.
Can Man Decide the Use of Nature?: 'The 23rd SONGEUN Art Award Exhibition’

On Jan. 6, Yoo Hwasoo was awarded the grand prize at the 23rd SONGEUN Art Award Exhibition. His works were highly praised for their effective and independent solutions to timely topics. Yoo Hwasoo has focused on the impact of technology on human labour, the relationship between technology and disabilities, and on the social phenomena that is created when these meet. In this exhibition, an installation work was presented using trees from a residential complex that had been cut down for damaging the view. (2023) shows a cut tree branch performing a caring role in growing mushrooms within the cutting-edge technology of a smart farm designed by humans. In his solo exhibition ‘The Seat of Weeds’ (2021), Yoo Hwasoo also used the method of displaying useless plants in a smart farm. In doing so, he questions the humancentred thinking that is advancing the technology and standards of use, yet is insensitive to the environment. Works of 20 more finalist artists (in addition to the grand prize winner) are also displayed at the (2023), which uses objects abandoned on the island, and Park Hyung-Jin's painting series (2023) which records the process of change in walnut trees planted in urban renewal areas are all projects that project contemporary concerns about ecology and the environment. Young domestic artists who made it to the finals address a variety of topics, including today's social issues, inner emotions, and the concept of art itself. In addition, the diverse aspects of Korean art can be seen in their work, which encompass various media such as painting, sculpture, installation, and video. The exhibition is held at SONGEUN until Feb. 24.
