SLIPPERY SALT

Glad to see that you’re keeping up the high standards set by your illustrious predecessors, great mag as usual.

I’ve just read Mossy’s bit on winter riding (Jan issue). Great tips for newbies and timely reminders for the rest of us. However, I’m surprised that he didn’t mention a fact that doesn’t seem to be that well known, at least by some of my riding mates. That being that roads that are wet from salt-melted ice offer only about 50% of the grip that plain wet roads do, so quite a reduction in grip over nice dry and warm summer roads. This is due to the salt increasing the lubricity of the melted water.
