I remember I was doing a play at the Playbox [Theatre] in 1988, it was called Black Rabbit, and I got my first pay which was literally cash in a small yellow envelope. I was getting a tram back home and I thought, ‘Okay, I can make a living out of this. Maybe this is what I’ll do.’ And that was it. That kind of sent me on my way [into a career in acting].
I was 17. I was familiar, I knew it existed, but I didn’t know how popular it was until I got on it. I remember I was really fortunate because I was the youngest in the cast of, like, a dozen other actors who really took me under their wing, so it was a great time of learning in terms of my work and just enjoying myself as a young person moving out of home and to a new city.
