Nanalan: the trippy Canadian kids' show taking over TikTok

Two anthropomorphic bananas skipping about in striped jim-jams, you say? An hoover named Noo-Noo whose insatiable thirst for guzzling up “tubby custard” knows no bounds? A magical, possibly cursed 50-pence piece that wreaks havoc every time somebody gives Queen Elizabeth II’s nose a quick rub? In hindsight, nearly all of the beloved staples of Nineties kids’ telly – from Bananas in Pyjamas to Teletubbies and The Queen’s Nose ‒ were based on fairly trippy premises. It’s a wonder any of us millennials emerged as (relatively) well-balanced adults after all that.

And now, 24 years after airing, the best and most bizarre of the lot is enjoying one of. 358.9m users and counting have taken in the psychedelic sights of the Nanalan hashtag so far, while there’s a seemingly endless stream of unofficial merch dedicated to the show for sale.
