The movement took root most firmly in southern California in the early postwar period, where a climate offering 284 days of sunshine a year lent itself to a dual-purpose street/race car vibe. That, and the growing significance of Los Angeles in the development of popular culture, made the car a key aspect of people’s identity, as well as essential transportation to move around this vast metropolis.
