The Porsche 911 enjoys a history like no other. Not only has Stuttgart’s iconic car been in production since 1963, it’s been produced from the same site on Porscheplatz, and maintained the same 2+2 layout and rear-engine design. It’s remained loyal to tradition since its inception in 1963, pre-dating mankind’s first step on the Moon and the introduction of colour television. For many enthusiasts today, its near-unrivalled longevity means the 911 has been a constant in many of our lives.
This year the 911 celebrates its 60th birthday, but how did we get here? 10 Millionth 911 produced (2017)
The date was 11 May 2017 and, some 54 years after manufacturing the first-ever 911, Porsche had just produced its millionth, putting the car into a new pantheon of the world’s most successful cars.
The ceremony itself was full of pomp as chairman of the supervisory board, Dr Wolfgang Porsche, stood next to a unique Irish green 991.2 Carrera S as it rolled off the production line at Zuffenhausen, a small plaque within the car’s wood-trimmed interior simply reading ‘911 Nr. 1000000’.
Sure, for context there have been 21.5 million VW Beetles produced, but the Porsche 911 is a luxury sports car and, what’s more, every single one of those cars has been created from the same site at Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, putting the car in a league of its own.
