Having read your recent article on vehicle tracking systems (issue 472), I write in the hope of making readers more security-conscious when it comes to protecting their vehicles.

As a retired police officer, I was always amazed by responses I got when attending a victim of vehicle or caravan theft. My questions for caravanners were: “Does the vehicle have a tracker fitted?” – “No,” was the usual reply. “Did the vehicle have a wheel clamp?” – “No.”

“Leg locks by any chance?” – “No.” “Roof markings?” – “No.” “What security was fitted?” – “A hitch lock.” And in the case of car theft: “Was a steering wheel lock fitted?” – “No.”

I then had to explain the likelihood of them getting their vehicle back was low, unless it was found abandoned, which was extremely rare.
