THE restored main line turntable at St Blazey depot in Cornwall, the Leighton Buzzard and Wensleydale railways and GWR Rowden Mill station were among the big winners at the 2023 National Railway Heritage Awards.
Announced by the awards’ executive director, Tim Hedley-Jones, with Bill Reeve, director of Rail, Transport Scotland, as the guest of honour at the ceremony in the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London on December 6, the annual competition recognises, acknowledges and rewards, for the public benefit, the very best in re-use, restoration and conservation of the UK's historic railway infrastructure.
The BAM Nuttall Partnership Award was made for the restoration of the Grade II* 65ft Cowans Sheldon 1952 turntable at St Blazey by the MPower Kernow Community Interest Company, which, as reported in issue 306, was first used since being repaired for turning LNER A3 Pacific No. 60103 on April 30, midway through the Railway Touring Company's ‘The Royal Duchy’ from BristolTemple Meads to
