Wallingford canopy and L&B’s Chelfham scoop top awards
THE Cholsey & Wallingford and Lynton & Barnstaple railways landed major honours at this year’s National Railway Heritage Awards ceremony.
The big event at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall, in Threadneedle Street, London, on December 1, held for the first time since 2019 after last year’s ceremony was conducted virtually due to the pandemic. Awards were presented by guest of honour Andrew Haines, the chief executive of Network Rail.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Community Interest Company won the Hendy & Pendle Trust Volunteers Award for the restoration of Chelfham station.
The Cholsey & Wallingford Railway’s installation of the disused Brunelera overall platform canopy from Maidenhead at Wallingford station was given a special award named in honour of late NRHA chairman Theo Steel, who passed away on October 20. As reported in issue 282, the heritage railway’s new showpiece terminus canopy was officially opened on June 25 by Network Rail chairman Sir Peter Hendy, who attended the NRHA ceremony to see the award presented.
