We Are Running in 'Degraded Mode'
Welcome to Galaxy Brain -- a newsletter from Charlie Warzel about technology and culture and big ideas. You can read what this is all about here. If you like what you see, consider forwarding it to a friend or two. We're still figuring things out in our new home so let me know what you think: galaxybrain@theatlantic.com
Housekeeping note: All of my Substack subscribers (free and paid) will be getting an email from me around December 1 with details on their free year-long Atlantic subscription (yay!). Also, if you would simply like to pay now and subscribe (because you want to support what I'm doing here), please do so with this link and I'll get some credit for the referral.
Reminder: You can listen to audio versions of this newsletter thanks to Curio. Here is my recent piece on Facebook's Vast Wasteland. And here's the recent one on the Great Resignation.
Quick Fun Thing: I created a Twitter bot that will tweet out links to pieces I'm reading after I've finished reading them. You can follow it here. I just started it up yesterday so there's not much up yet. That will change starting today.
In two weeks, the book I co-wrote with my partner, Anne Helen comes out. Broadly, the gist of is that it’s not really about we work, but we work. We argue that knowledge workers have been presented with a rare opportunity to do away with a lot of the performative, vestigial elements of our careers that exhaust us/burn us out/create toxic power imbalances and make us miserable. The book is a case for de-centering one’s job as the primary force and sense of meaning in one’s life.
