few columns, I’d like to discuss three tools I use to strengthen my approach to improvisation. These three things help me to tell better stories with a solo, all of which have nothing to do with note choice or melodic information. They are: , where I will repeat a phrase and establish the line as a, wherein I "answer" lines I play with complimentary statements; and “handcuffs,” which I envision as painting myself into a musical box. I find that if I set limits on where and what I can play, it forces me to find new alternatives.
