“About a mile from there up the road to Llithfaen a footpath sign points you up the slope of Yr Eifl. This is the path to Tre’r Ceiri, in legend “the town of the giants”, in fact an Iron Age hill fort. But no ordinary one. For the path zigzags you up through heather to shattered walls that enclose dozens of Iron Age house foundations. Hut remains exist on many hills though you often need the eye of faith to see them. But at Tre’r Ceiri they are so elaborate that Iron Age life is more tangible there Exploring Wales (Faber, 1970)
