Suburban Chicago chamber mum on Awake Americans membership months after taking it under review

In May, Awake Americans' membership in the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce came under scrutiny. Months after the chamber said it was taking the matter under advisement, however, Awake Americans still appears to be an active member. Months after Awake Americans’ membership in the Naperville, Illinois, Area Chamber of Commerce came under scrutiny for its affiliation with anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, chamber officials are still not responding to questions about whether the nonprofit group remains a part of the organization.

Yet based on Awake Americans’ social media — where the group has, on several occasions since June, boasted attendance at chamber events — its membership appears intact.

Awake Americans was founded in late April by Naperville resident Shannon Adcock as a tax-exempt affiliate to Awake Illinois, a group also based in Naperville that opposes gender identity and sex education in schools and has taken high profile anti-LGBTQ stances.
