WHERE TO EAT & DRINK KASANE

Kasane is on the southern bank of the Chobe River in the far north-eastern corner of Botswana. Its name comes from the Chikuhane word isani, which means “hardwood”. As the administrative centre of the Chobe District, its main drawcard is Chobe National Park, 10 km outside town, but its proximity to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia also makes it a great base for travellers looking to explore Victoria Falls, Livingstone or the Zambezi Region.

Kasane is home to lots of lodges, two big shopping centres (even a Woolies!), filling stations, hardware stores, banks, an international airport, you name it. It's hard to imagine that it was once a remote outpost.

Still, it retains a wild air. There are no boundary fences between the town and the national park, so seeing wildlife like warthogs roaming the streets is a common occurrence. (Two bull elephants crossed the road while I was being taxied to
