Split is simply one of my favourite places in the world to visit. From a food and wine perspective, it’s just a fascinating place, and offers some of the best cuisine in all of Europe, along with an exciting and rapidly developing wine scene.
Set on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, Split is the second largest city in Croatia and the largest city on the Dalmatian coast. Originally founded as a Greek colony in the 2nd or 3rd century BC, the city changed hands countless times over the centuries, including coming under the rule of the Romans, Byzantines and then the Venetians. The influence of these cultures is still found in this fabulous city today, and is nowhere more pronounced than in the Venetian influence on the food of Split.
